Speaking with the River - Citizen Science School Holiday Workshop

Weaving Nyangbal yarns of the Richmond River  |  Jugan Dandii Weavers

This special workshop was held on Thursday 15 April 2021 between 10.30am - 1.00pm at  Missingham Park Ballina.

The workshop was open to all ages and a family friendly event and offered free to all members of the community to learn about and share stories of the Richmond River through weaving with local weavers Tania Marlowe and Deb Cole from Jugan Dandii who shared their hand weaving techniques and riverside Nyangbal yarns, for participants to learn about introduced and natural fibres of the local area and how they can be prepared and used to make a small sample fish trap.

Tania and Deb demonstrated and used a variety of local endemic and native fibres with some introduced fibres to adapt to a contemporary version of a fish trap or small sample fish trap, and explore adaptation of practice to a changed environment. This technique also lent itself to exploration of other basketry forms including food gathering bags. This riverside workshop was a unique opportunity for community of all ages to connect to country with Aunty Tania and her riverside yarns, sharing local Nyangbal Culture of Ballina.
