Introduction to Printmaking: Drypoint Etching |  Christine Porter

Saturday 15 - Sunday 16 July 2023

Time: 10am - 3.00pm
Where: Ignite Studios - 60 Crane Street, Ballina
Ages: 18+
Cost: $260 (incl GST) - tools and materials included

Join professional printmaker Christine Porter for an immersive weekend workshop, to learn the fascinating technique of colour intaglio printmaking. Working small, and with their own drawings, participants will create traditional drypoint plates, and print with basic colours to produce a small print ready to frame, and collection of experimental prints. This workshop is suitable for beginning or emerging printmakers, and artists from other media. More experienced printmakers will be encouraged to extend their knowledge base.

Drypoint printing is the technique of scratching an image into the surface of card, plastic, or metal. Ink is then pushed into the scratches, the excess wiped off, and the plate covered with damp paper and pushed through a traditional etching press. The plate can then be re-inked and reprinted, creating multiples of the image.

Christine Porter is a full-time professional painter and printmaker based in Lismore. Her work is held in the National Gallery of Australia, and in public and corporate collections across Australia, and private collections worldwide. She has been awarded more than 200 prizes since 1990, including the 2006 MacGregor Fellowship from the University of Southern Qld. She is a trained and qualified teacher, and has a Bachelor of Visual Arts, majoring in printmaking.

Clothes will get inky, so participants should wear something that can get messy, and/or an apron. Closed toed shoes are essential.

This workshop will include a short break for lunch. Participants are invited to bring their own lunch, or are welcome to eat at the Gallery Café located next door to Ignite Studios.

Advance bookings are essential via the link below, or by phoning the Gallery on 02 6681 0530.
