TOGETHER - Arts & Community Wellbeing Day

Cost: Free to attend and no registrations required. Tools and materials provided.
BYO snacks or enjoy the Gallery Café next door. 

A free half-day of culture, creativity and connection at NRCG & Ignite Studios. Get inventive with Roundabout Theatre’s Pop Up Play Space and the Lollipop Ladies; try your hand at some peaceful weaving with natural fibres with Aunty Tania Marlowe and Deb Cole from Jugan Dandii; get creative with Claudie Frock’s Let’s Stick Together Collage experience; dive into a Virtual Reality Art Workshop or explore digital storytelling with Social Futures’ Computer Clubhouse; or join in a DANCE THE ART: Inclusive Gallery Movement Tour with interdisciplinary performance artist Katie Cooper-Wares.

This is a free day for the community to experience a range of playful and creative activities.

No bookings are required – come along to wander around, and dip in and out of the experiences as you like.

 

*WEATHER UPDATE - This Saturday’s event will go ahead rain, hail or shine, however due to the forecast (and the soggy state of our lawns!) we have postponed the outdoor elements of our program to later in the year - Pop Up Play Space, and The Slow Show, by Roundabout Theatre. All other event activities will be indoors.

COMMUNITY WEAVING CIRCLE - Jugan Dandii

Join with Bundjalung/Nyanbal woman Tania Marlowe and Debra Cole, and local weaving collective Jugan Dandii, who will share a range of foundational techniques in natural fibre weaving. Come and learn some new skills, join the conversation about Country and culture, or simply sit and watch as a range of functional and sculptural forms are created. All are welcome to join in this relaxed and informal session. Children welcome!

DANCE THE ART MOVEMENT TOURS - Katie Cooper-Wares

Has a work of art ever made you want to move your body? Is strolling quietly in a gallery just not your thing? Are you interested in responding to artworks in a different way, or curious to watch what happens for others around you? Then this is the tour for you!

Join interdisciplinary performance artist and creative producer Katie Cooper-Wares for a different kind of Gallery tour. Katie specialises in dance theatre, storytelling and comedy, and her collaborative, socially engaged practice is driven by the untold stories of diverse artists and communities.

Meet at the NRCG Gallery Reception at 10.30am or 12.00pm to commence your tour.

All bodies welcome. No movement experience needed.

LET’S STICK TOGETHER COLLECTIVE COLLAGE - Claudie Frock and Mia Zapata

Join Claudie and her special assistant - artist and photographer Mia Zapata, for a fun collaging and drawing workshop, while reconnecting and reflecting, side by side with your friends, family, and community. Let’s Stick Together is a collective community-focused art adventure open to all ages, skill levels and abilities, and designed to bring the community together through playful, intergenerational creative activities.  

Claudie is a Northern Rivers-based artist, performer, educator and facilitator, and a founding member of the Creative First Aid Alliance – a collective of artists, health and community workers that formed as a recovery response following the devastating 2022 flood events in the region. Let’s Stick Together builds on her work from recent creative recovery projects, such as the award-winning Collage Club, and Soft Circus and The Chalkies.

 NRCG Web Social Media TOGETHER MAY 2024 Artist Various Social Futures

 

SOCIAL FUTURES COMPUTER CLUBHOUSE – Sean Spencer and Caitlan Baxter

Blur the lines between physical and virtual, and forge new pathways of artistic expression with Social Futures Computer Club, who will transform Ignite Studios into a world where reality, imagination and the virtual converge. Using Augmented Reality and VR headsets, Sean and Caitlan from the Clubhouse team will show you how to create your own digital artwork to overlay onto physical space through the medium of Mixed Reality Technology. Or use an iPad to design an amazing piece of origami, collage, or other paper-based artwork to be constructed in the real world. 

Sean and Caitlan work at Social Futures' Computer Clubhouse in Lismore and Ballina providing workshops for young people, in the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM).

ARTIST OPEN STUDIO – Mayra Castro

Ignite Studios resident artist Mayra Castro will open the doors to her studio for the day. Come along to see her at work, or have a chat about her artistic process and creative practice. 

Mayra Castro is a painter, photographer, animator and filmmaker of Chilean and Mexican heritage, based in the Northern Rivers for the past seven years, and currently working out of Ignite Studios. She is developing work for a solo show which will be presented in Ignite Studios later in the year.

THE SLOW SHOW – Roundabout Theatre (**postponed due to weather)

Meet Trichia, a nature-loving human, and her companion Helix, a giant garden snail, as they slowly travel the world, enjoying the magic in simple things. Share a cup of tea, a song and a travel story, or perhaps have a slow cooking lesson in salt and sugar-free cuisine.

A colourful games installation will fill the Gallery’s greenspace for the day, with action packed fun, race lanes, obstacle courses, oversized games, dance competitions and more. Along for the ride are the wonderfully absurd and slightly bossy Lollipop Ladies, commandeering the space with all sorts of fun games to play.
